The Commercial Reality Check

The proponents of the European capsule love to wave the flag of scientific independence. They claim we will lose our edge in microgravity research if we don't have our own taxi to the station.

This is a false choice. Access to orbit can be bought off the shelf. Purchasing rides from commercial providers costs a fraction of maintaining a standing army of engineers to design, test, and certify life support systems from scratch.

When you look at the balance sheets of institutions pushing for independent human spaceflight, you find the real motivation. It is about industrial policy disguised as exploration. It is about protecting aerospace employment in specific parliamentary districts. It has nothing to do with maximizing scientific return per euro spent.

Every euro diverted to building a redundant crew capsule is a euro stolen from Earth observation satellites that monitor our changing climate, from deep space probes that map the universe, and from quantum communication networks that will secure our digital infrastructure. We are sacrificing our actual technological leadership in high-value sectors to fund a twentieth-century prestige project.

The Smart Pivot

Europe does not need a vehicle. Europe needs an exit strategy from bureaucratic inertia.

The path forward requires a radical shift in how we handle orbital access. First, stop treating crew transportation as an internal manufacturing objective. Treat it as a utility. Buy seats in bulk from commercial providers through transparent, competitive bidding.

Second, reallocate every single cent earmarked for human-rated launcher development into downstream payload innovation. Fund the labs, the startups, and the research centers that turn microgravity environments into commercial breakthroughs in pharmaceuticals and materials science.

Third, let go of the ego. The era of every major geopolitical bloc needing its own independent manned capsule ended the day commercial rockets drove launch costs down by an order of magnitude.

You can cling to the romantic notion of European boots on independent European stairs, or you can build an economy that actually wins in the modern space age. You cannot afford to do both.
