People act as though a centuries-old navigational tool is an active psychological operation designed to belittle the Global South.

It is time to stop throwing tantrums about map distortions. The panic over map size is built on a fundamental misunderstanding of what a map is actually for, and your obsession with equal-area projections is solving a problem that does not exist.

Gerardus Mercator did not draft his 1st-millennium-adjacent projection in 1569 to trick school children. He built it for sailors. On a Mercator map, any straight line drawn between two points is a line of constant compass bearing.
